A Thanksgiving 1st Birthday!

Last year we joked it was the "Thanksgiving baby switch" at OP Regional that would make headlines on the news....this year its the Thanksgiving FIRST Birthday! Yes, my babies turned into toddlers on Thursday November 25th. The actual day was pretty uneventful and we did our Thanksgiving festivities as usual. I made them cinnamon rolls for breaksfast so that was something they of course enjoyed! They also got to eat 2 Thanksgiving feasts and loved every minute of that.

Last weekend we had a family b-day party for the boys where we sang "Happy Birthday", they ripped apart their cake, and opened presents.

Here are some highlights from the big day...

I bought a pinata for the kids. They lined up from youngest to oldest and Sam and Ben got to go first:
The adults trying to wrangle the kids into line:

Here are the rest of the cousins waiting their turn:

My cousin Mallory made the boys adorable mini-cakes to eat- a soccer ball and baseball! We lit their candles and Sam tried to put his handle out with his hands.....so Mom blew them out :)

Before:
The boys love to eat as I mentioned several times on the blog. Sam kinda picked at his cake but Ben totally tore into his and pretty much ate the entire thing! He was hamming it up too while everyone watched him eat it.

After:

We also had a small friends party. Two parties, two 1 year olds.......this is me after it was all over.....me tired:

Here is the last of the monthly pictures. I am stopping because: 1. I ran out of signs 2. there is no way in hell they will even start to sit still anymore!

Happy b-day to our friend Kevbo too! Here is a pic of all the b-day boys! Look at this motley crew:

Matt and I were talking last night and I asked him was it me or did the boys grow up overnight? As soon as they turned 1 I feel like they are little boys now and act so much older. I'm sure it's just a mental thing but to us we can tell a big difference between 11 months and 1 year.

Ok, to recap what the lil whipper snappers are doing at 1 year:

Both:
- No walking but "cruising" a TON
- Weaning themselves off the bottle. They are just not that interested in it anymore
- Talking a ton
- Still putting everything in their mouths
- Loves attention from anyone and everyone
- Can point out a ball in any picture

Sam:
- According to Matt's entire family who witnessed it (besides me and Matt, of course!- love how that works out).......Sam took his first step tonight! 1 year and 2 days old! He was standing at Aunt Allison and Uncle Kris's house and took one step and fell. I stepped away for 1 minute and missed it :(
- Says "Bye", "Ball", "mama", "dada"
- Can point out Santa in his Christmas book
- Favorite things: balls, holiday stickers on the door, Maggie, head butting, cars, crawling up stairs, baths, crawling behind Matt's recliner and looking at books, exploring
- Least favorite things: getting his diaper changed, getting snot wiped from his nose, getting snot sucked out of his nose, getting put in his car seat, getting put down for a nap, eggs (scrambled)
-My favorite tihng about Sam: He's got a little bit of a bad boy streak in him but then he looks at you with a sweet smile and makes you laugh. He knows when he is being bad but he does it anyway. I also love his crooked 2 front teeth.

Ben:
- Loves walking with his walker. He kinda waddles and his feet go outward like a penguin
- Says "ball", "uh-oh", "dada", "da-do".....and many other things we can't quite understand.
- Has to get tubes in a few weeks :(
- Points to nose when asked "where is mommy's nose"?
- Such a happy, easy-going guy
- Favorite things: bread, balls, his blanket, Grandmas, walkers, exploring, baths, "getting him", holidy sticker on the door, bird picture on our wall
- Least favorite thing: when the doctor looks in his ear, dropping his blanket out of his crib when he's trying to sleep, when I stick my fingers in his mouth to see if he ate something he shouldn't have (he bites them really hard!)
- My favorite thing about Ben: I love his sweet smile and when I pick him up he latches onto me tight like he's giving me a hug. I also love his chunky butt and thighs

When I think back to the day they were born it always makes me smile because it was, of course, the most amazing day of my life. Jamie called us at 5:30am to tell us her water broke and they were born via uncomplicated c-section at 9:05am (Sam) and 9:06am (B en). Sam came out wailing and was feisty from the start. Ben was fine but had a very quiet cry and needed a little oxygen that bought him a couple of hours in the nursery. He was back in our room with us by the time everyone came in to see them. Jamie and Dale were amazingly cool, calm and collected while Matt and I were on the edge of our seats like we were watching the most exciting movie ever made. The adreniline kicked in as soon as we got the phone call that morning and didn't stop until about a month later.

The best part of the day: Seeing the babies for the 1st time and seeing our families so happy. After all we went through I always knew some day and someway that moment would come and it did and it was so much better than I thought it would be. God is good!!

To Jamie and Dale, we love you and can never thank you enough. You will never know what you did for us.

To our parents, thank you for all you did for us this past year. Twins are HARD to raise and you really do need a lot of help and thank goodness we have you!

To Sam and Ben, Happy Birthday!! We love you and you are our life!

  1. I know how thankful you are for your little buddies! You are a great mommy and have done a great job of blogging and keeping track of their progress as they have grown over the past year. If you think a year goes by fast, just wait until you're posting on their 2nd birthday. Anna's not quite there yet but it is amazing how much of a grown up she already is!
